Состояние товарного рынка, при котором на нем действует очень ограниченное число операторов, как правило, крупных корпораций. Практически олигопольны во всех странах автомобильные рынки, поскольку число производителей автомобилей весьма ограничено. Для олигополии характерна сильная ценовая взаимозависимость рыночных операторов. Поскольку каждый из игроков обладает мощными ресурсами и резервами для снижения цен, то ценовая война (см. Price War) на олигопольных рынках может носить затяжной, изнурительный характер. В свое время японские автомобильные производители в основном ценовыми методами вели упорную борьбу с целью закрепиться на американском рынке. Несмотря на то, что по качеству японские автомобили быстро обошли американских конкурентов, последствия этой войны сказывались еще долгие годы – японские машины считались дешевым «ширпотребом».

Ситуация на рынке (структура рынка), когда действует небольшое количество продавцов продукции (фирм). Особенность ее в том, что здесь каждая из конкурирующих фирм способна влиять на цену продукции, предлагаемой остальными фирмами, а следовательно, и на их уровень затрат. Таким образом, при О. прибыль каждой фирмы зависит не только от реакции потребителей, но и от действий конкурентов. Такая ситуация моделируется с помощью аппарата теории игр (см. Олигопольные эксперименты). Различаются три типа олигополистического поведения на рынке: сговор о ценах, доминирование одной из фирм и монополистическая конкуренция. Из-за эффекта дилеммы заключенного (когда фирмы по возможности удерживаются от повышения цен на свои товары, опасаясь аналогичной реакции конкурентов), на олигопольном рынке цены обычно отличаются жесткостью. Это демонстрируется изогнутой кривой спроса (рис. O.4). Перелом кривой спроса приходится на уровень преобладающей цены Р*: Если фирма поднимет цену выше Р*, кривая спроса станет очень эластичной.
